Back-to-School Social Media Event
Back-to-School Social Media event explores cyber safety and how to protect our children

“Like Spider-Man, with great power comes great responsibility,” the student says in the video at Dr. Rochelle Clark’s workshop, “Social Media - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”
When it comes to online safety, social media has its’ own unique set of problems for teens seeking to navigate everything from cyberbullying to inappropriate chats and pictures. Many parents are either novices to social media or fail to effectively monitor their child’s activity. This month, nearly 150 parents, students and community members attended the Back-to-School Social Media Craze at Crete-Monee High School. Attendees to the six workshops and seminars received invaluable information to help them understand the risks and benefits of social media. Hosted by State Representative Thaddeus Jones and the Kids in the Hall Youth Leadership Group, the event also featured an evening of conversation as a representative from Facebook was on hand to facilitate a conversation about digital citizenship.

The workshop topics presented included the following:

  • Senior Citizens vs. Millennials: Closing the Digital Generation Gap (Facilitated by Mr. Kenneth Surma, Asst. Supt. of Business)
  • Social Media After Dark: What Every Young Adult Should Know About Social Media (Kids in the Hall Leadership Organization)
  • Digital Divide: A Talk With Comcast About Closing the Gap in Digital Access and Accessing Community Programs (Facilitated by Dr. Nathaniel Cunningham, Jr. and Dr. Todd Hall)
  • Social Media Apps 101: A Student-led Tutorial Navigating the World of Social Media Applications
  • Licensed to Drive Legislator Talk: What Does the Law Say About Maneuvering the Internet Highway? (Featuring state legislators)
  • Social Media - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: How Schools Can Overcome Issues of Cyber Bullying, Cyber Racism and Cyber Attacks on Social Media (Facilitated by Dr. Rochelle Clark, Asst. Superintendent of District Affairs)
