On June 8th and June 9th, Crete-Monee Middle School invited the Lincoln Way Special Recreation Association (LWSRA) to spend the day with 6th and 7th grade students in an effort to raise awareness about disabilities and the variety of sports and recreation activities that are available to children and adults who have cognitive or physical disabilities. The LWSRA staff members taught students about disabilities and gave them the opportunity to experience some of the sports they offer through their association. Students played wheelchair basketball, sit-down volleyball, and goalball, a variation on soccer designed for blind athletes. Students played each sport while simulating a disability, increasing their understanding of and appreciation for the talent of disabled athletes. A great time was had by all, and students were encouraged to spread the word about the LWSRA and the services that they offer.
