It was a lovely day at Balmoral Elementary last week (Thursday, February 23, 2017) as school board members, local and federal elected officials were on hand for the presentation of 60 Fire Kids Edition tablets to Balmoral students by Amazon General Manager Mike Flannery (Joliet Fulfillment Center). Balmoral will be utilizing the new technology to assist with their Bulldog Block Intervention Reading Program – a differentiated intervention program for students in grades K-5. In addition, the company has donated: colorful kid-proof cases for each tablet, a one-year subscription to “Amazon Free Time Unlimited” (which includes free access to 10,000 kid-friendly books, movies, tv shows, educational apps and games) and a $550 gift card (extending the subscription for the next 5 years!)

Principal Ghantel Perkins thanked Amazon for the generous donation, stating that it will “support the work toward the English Language Arts (ELA) foundational skills while the e-reader feature will allow scholars access to a variety of books to increase their time in text,” she said. Teachers will have the ability to match applications and texts to the specific goals of their groups. The students shared their thanks via a heartwarming performance to the song, “Only One Call Away.” The Communications Office coordinated via phone and email with Amazon Corporate Community Specialist in Seattle to plan and execute the event. The event was also live tweeted using the hashtag #BalmoralElementary and #NextGenAmazonian #BalmoralRocks #BalmoralSmilesforAmazon.
