201-U Students Find Healthy Beginnings
Elementary students around the district are pulling out their mixing bowls and sharpening their culinary skills as part of the Uncle Ben’s Ben’s Beginner’s Cooking Contest. As part of a healthy lifestyle initiative, Uncle Ben is inspiring kids and their parents to cook together to establish healthy beginnings in life. Participants were to prepare their favorite kid-friendly rice dish then film a short video sharing their child’s enthusiasm for cooking. "As parents and school food service providers know all too well, finding healthy foods that children enjoy can be a challenge," said Beth Proctor, Director of Food Service. "The Ben’s Beginners program mission is to encourage parents and their children to cook together…to cook healthy meals."

Several students at Crete Elementary and Coretta Scott King Magnet School were up to the challenge and helped their parents whip up some delicious recipes! After uploading their videos to Facebook, these culinary duos are now eligible to win $20,000 in cash, an appearance on the Rachael Ray Show, and a makeover for their school cafeteria valued at $50,000! It’s time to view our contestants and their recipe! (Videos can be viewed by visiting the Uncle Ben's page on Facebook.)
